Doing Good by Stealth: The Philanthropy and Service of Annie Burr Lewis

Historic Preservation: Regional & National

Annie Burr Lewis’s advocacy for historic preservation led to service on a number of important regional and national organizations, including the Antiquarian and Landmarks Society of Connecticut, the Preservation Society of Newport County, the National Council for Historic Sites and Buildings, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

National Council for Historic Sites and Buildings

Annie Burr’s work with the National Council for Historic Sites and Buildings gave her valuable experience and personal connections upon which she was able to draw in her historic preservation activities. When she joined the council in 1952, it was operating alongside the recently formed National Trust for Historic Preservation, of which she was a charter member and in 1951 a life member, and with which it later merged.
